2111 years. Technology companies dominate the world. His experiments have long exceeded all ethical standards. Senior executives in the high-tech sector apply the rules of technology legislation. Become one of them and protect humanity from self-destruction.

Spyhack is a sci-fi climatic spy game with stealth and tactical gameplay elements. You are acting as an agent for a secret agency ATD. In a world dominated by tech companies, only one rule applies: if you don’t hack, you’re hacked. Your objective is to stop The Dome Ltd, a secret project that could bring humanity to the brink of self-destruction.

In addition to cyber infiltration, IRL guards must be monitored and can be neutralized lethally or non-lethally. Identifying their patterns and staying out of their sight is the usual dance of timing, caution, and planning required to defeat the stupid, hawk-eyed guards. The hacks themselves tend to consist of familiar mini-games—match this symbol to another within a time limit, activate remote devices to open locked doors, or send messages—and Bond gadgets can be used in some pretty fun combinations.

So it’s sad to say that SpyHack is a very disappointing game on many, many levels. The core gameplay is average, having been replaced by decades of high-quality adventure games that use similar gameplay mechanics. The fantastic program Invisible Inc. is not only the newest but also one of the best, and SpyHack is nowhere near that standard. However, since this game is available on Switch, it at least has niche appeal on the platform. Unfortunately, you’ll quickly see why, as the joysticks feel clunky and imprecise when clicking small icons on the small screen. Touching the touchscreen is not a good alternative as it is physically uncomfortable, and you also have to constantly touch levers and buttons.

However, it doesn’t end there. The Switch does struggle with framerate whether you’re in handheld or docked mode, which is odd considering the game is fairly basic on a technical level. It feels like it’s running at less than 30 frames per second: cursor alignment is a chore, scrolling around the screen is choppy, and manipulating levels in general feels like a chore.

To top it off, when you die from an opening and the level reloads, it can take upwards of thirty seconds to get back into the action. In the abstract, this may not seem like a big deal, but when you first step on stage, you get it wrong pretty quickly. The load-to-play ratio can feel like 1:1, and you’re inches away from throwing the damn thing against the wall.

SpyHack is a game that took a long time to reach a basic level of technical skill. Changes to the gameplay and some new ideas would be nice, but a simple, no-frills adventure would be fine on the Switch. However, given this level of crap, I’d suggest looking elsewhere for the thrill of a cyber adventure. Wearing a Lycra jumpsuit during a search is optional.
